All throughout movies history, we have been showcased movies where the hero usually fights against a system that is usually too far corrupt and consumed in its glory that it cannot change but ultimately good prevails over evil and it’s a happily ever after. However, realities are far from what we see on the screens. But watching a real reflection of the grim realities our worlds would dilute the real reason why we watch movies, i.e. to escape those realities. Nonetheless, sooner or later we would have to face the consequences of realities, but to be able to appeal to a wider audience would require a special skill set to not just reach them, but to resonate with their senses and if anybody wants to look up for inspirations, then ‘Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri’ is your encyclopedia for everything that you would be looking up for.
When an unusual title is assigned to a movie, it usually gathers some curiosity amongst the general populace, however, after the initial steam, all the curiosity fizzes out. But with Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, it’s a case study in itself. The audience are given the reason for the title at the beginning of the movie, however, the curiosity of the title along with the impact it had on our lives lingers on far beyond the run-time of the movie. There are multiple reasons for such a reaction from the audience. It would be, the story, the screenplay, the actors, the creative crew behind it or even the time of the release. All of those boxes were ticked that connected with the audience to perfection.
Frances McDormand is no doubt an excellent actor. With this movie, her status elevates to the greats. However without the services of the other leads i.e. Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson, the movie wouldn’t have pinched the audiences. The chemistry between the three, be it when Jason bullies Mildred or when Willoughby sympathizes with her, or even when Jason and Mildred bond over their mission, all seem like a natural progression of characters, maybe from a dramatic standpoint. But the ultimate goal is pretty straightforward, none of them give up on their viewpoints. While Woody Harrelson and Frances McDormand have added another feather to their cap, it is Sam Rockwell who went from, I have seen this actor in another movie but I don’t remember from which one, to why have I never noticed Sam Rockwell before!
Its never easy for actors to emote feeling of a character which they cannot relate, however, its not easy for the script writers to know what clicks and what doesn’t. And that is exactly where the director gets the EQ of the movie to the right tone. In a movie like this, where the audiences are connected on their EQ, it might be tough on the actors, but it would be tough on the director as well. Here, Martin McDonagh plays the perfect mediator between the script and performance when he fishes out the right dose of good and bad from the complete cast, be it the jackass from Jason Dixon or the ruthlessness of Mildred, or even the harsh truths from Willoughby none of them showcase an aorta of doubt, the credit to which rests equally on the cast and Martin.
All said and done, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is not your regular black comedy. It combines the right proportion of drama, fiction and comedy and manifests itself to an adrenaline filled ride about a mother looking for vengeance rather than justice in a little town called Ebbing.
